How Wound System Works
Wounds are not just a bonus damage marker. They are threshold-based body-part states tied to hitzone values, focus strikes, tempered scars, Weakness Exploit, Partbreaker, and Flayer.

Wound Lifecycle
-
Tender State — Repeated attacks create white scars. This does not raise hitzone value yet, but it warns you that a wound is close to opening.
-
Open Wound — More damage turns the scar red. The wounded part usually gains a higher hitzone value and takes more raw damage from attacks that use physical hitzones.
-
Break or Focus Strike — The wound has limited HP. You can damage it normally, destroy it with a focus strike, or time a big hit right before it breaks for better value.
-
Cooldown — After the wound is destroyed, black scar tissue appears. That body part cannot be wounded again immediately, and each monster part has a limited wound count.
Core Rules
Threshold Based
Wounds work like part-break and status thresholds. Each monster body part has values for tendering, opening, and destroying wounds, modified by quest and multiplayer scaling.
No Overflow Carryover
Excess damage does not carry into the next wound stage. If a stage needs 50 damage and you deal 300, the extra 250 is lost when the state changes.
Hitzone Value Boost
Open wounds often raise the body part hitzone value, increasing raw damage taken. Fixed or armor-ignoring damage like sticky, shelling, and impact phials does not benefit the same way.
Tempered Blue Scars
Tempered monsters can have blue scars that open directly after enough damage. Destroying one guarantees a topple and drops heavy damage pods.
Wound Skills and Payoffs
| Skill / System | What It Does | Practical Note | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weakness Exploit | Adds affinity on weak points, with extra affinity on open wounds. | At level 5, wounds can give the full 50% if the hit lands on the wound. | |
| Focus Strike | Destroys wounds and deals fixed wound-break damage. | Breaking multiple wounds in one focus strike increases later break numbers. | |
| Partbreaker | In Wilds, boosts focus-strike wound-breaking damage. | Strong on weapons that can break multiple wounds at once. | |
| Flayer | Improves wound infliction and can trigger fixed non-elemental bursts. | Chance-based and attack-eligibility dependent, so it is matchup and weapon specific. | |
| Mount Wounds | Mounting can create bonus wounds. | Do not casually focus-strike a mounted hunter’s wound unless coordinated. |
RULE · Quick Takeaway — Do not always pop wounds instantly. Open wounds are temporary damage windows. Learn how much damage your combo deals, then decide whether to keep attacking the wound or cash it out with focus strike.
