How Sharpness System Works

Sharpness is a core melee damage multiplier. It affects raw and elemental damage, bounce risk, sharpness loss, and which skills are worth slotting for each weapon type.

Sharpness Management Flow

  1. Check Color Tier — Sharpness color decides raw and elemental multipliers. Higher colors increase damage and reduce bounce risk; red sharpness is dangerous and should be avoided.

  2. Watch Consumption — Each successful hit costs sharpness depending on weapon and move. Fast weapons burn through gauges quickly, while some moves consume little or none.

  3. Pick Preservation — Use Handicraft, Protective Polish, Master’s Touch, Razor Sharp, or sharpening tools depending on your weapon’s gauge and affinity.

  4. Keep White Up — For current low/high-rank Wilds builds, white sharpness is the practical top tier. Staying there is often a direct damage increase.

Core Sharpness Rules

Color is Damage

Sharpness applies separate multipliers to raw and elemental damage. Green is the baseline, blue and white are meaningful gains, and red sharply reduces damage.

Bounce Risk

Low sharpness is more likely to bounce on hard monster parts, leaving you open. Bouncing also increases sharpness loss.

Element Also Benefits

Elemental damage has its own sharpness modifier. White sharpness gives a strong elemental boost on top of raw benefits.

Not Every Action Is Equal

Shield bash may not consume sharpness, Gunlance shelling consumes very little in Wilds, and perfect guard prevents guard-related sharpness loss on weapons like Great Sword and Charge Blade.

Sharpness Skills

SkillWhat It DoesBest Fit
HandicraftExtends maximum sharpness and can unlock higher color tiers.Weapons with hidden white/purple potential; slot only enough to reach the useful tier.
Protective PolishPrevents sharpness loss after sharpening for a fixed duration.Fast weapons or weapons with tiny white/purple gauges.
Speed SharpeningShortens sharpening animation.Convenient, but weaker because mounts and Whetfish Fin+ already solve this well.
Master’s Touch80% chance to prevent sharpness loss on critical hits.High-affinity melee builds using Weakness Exploit, Agitator, Maximum Might, or Critical Eye.
Razor SharpHalves the chance of consuming sharpness at level 3.Weapons with naturally small gauges or fast hit rates.

Weapon Strategy

Weapon PaceExamplesRecommended Direction
Slow HeavyGreat Sword, Hammer, Hunting HornPrioritize high sharpness tier, Handicraft, and Master’s Touch when affinity is high.
Fast HittersDual Blades, Sword & Shield, Long SwordRazor Sharp, Protective Polish, and Master’s Touch are strong because hits are frequent.
HybridSwitch Axe, Charge Blade, LanceMix Handicraft with Razor Sharp or Protective Polish depending on gauge size and combo rhythm.

TIP · Loadout Tip — Carry Whetfish Fin+ and put sharpening on the radial menu. It is often a better comfort solution than spending build slots on Speed Sharpening.
