Damage Mechanics
How Affinity Works
Affinity is Monster Hunter's critical-hit chance. It can raise raw damage dramatically, but it does not automatically boost elemental, explosive, shelling, phial, sticky, or other fixed-damage sources.
How Affinity Works
Affinity is Monster Hunter's critical-hit chance. It can raise raw damage dramatically, but it does not automatically boost elemental, explosive, shelling, phial, sticky, or other fixed-damage sources.
Affinity Damage Flow
-
Check Damage Type — Start by asking whether the attack can crit. Raw weapon hits can. Shelling, sticky explosions, phial explosions, and other fixed damage usually cannot.
-
Build Affinity — Stack reliable affinity sources such as Weakness Exploit, Agitator, Maximum Might, and Frenzy plus Antivirus when the weapon actually benefits from critical hits.
-
Boost Crit Value — Once affinity is high, Critical Boost becomes the payoff. Element builds can also consider Critical Element if elemental damage is a real part of the plan.
-
Skip When Needed — If the main damage cannot crit, stop chasing affinity and put those slots into the skills that directly improve the real damage source.
Affinity Stack on a Weak Point (Enraged Monster)
| Stat | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Weakness Exploit 5 | 50% aff | +30% on weak points, +20% on wounds |
| Agitator 5 | 15% aff | +20 attack, +15% affinity while enraged |
| Antivirus 3 | 25% aff | After curing Frenzy from Gore Magala 2P |
| Maximum Might 3 | 30% aff | While stamina is full |
Stacking these reliably pushes you past 100% affinity, which guarantees crits on every weak-point hit.
Core Concepts
The Core Rule
Positive affinity is the chance for a critical strike, which normally deals 25% more physical damage. Negative affinity creates blunders, which deal 25% less raw damage. Critical hits show a bright pink slash and star marker, while blunders show a blue marker under the damage number.
What Affinity Does Not Boost
- Element damage does not benefit unless you run Critical Element.
- Explosive or fixed damage — Sticky Ammo, Gunlance shelling, Charge Blade phial explosions — does not care about affinity.
- If a build's main damage comes from those sources, affinity skills are usually low priority.
Best Affinity Sources
- Weakness Exploit 5 — 30% on weak points, +20% on wounds.
- Agitator 5 — 20 attack, 15% affinity while enraged.
- Maximum Might 3 — 30% affinity at full stamina.
- Frenzy + Antivirus 3 — 25% total after cure.
Build Priority
For most raw builds, stacking affinity is strong because 100% affinity means every raw hit receives the crit bonus. But weapon-specific skills, Critical Boost, and Critical Element can outvalue forcing Critical Eye into limited weapon slots.
Status Build Bonus
Foray can be powerful on poison or paralysis builds. At level 5, it adds attack and affinity while the monster is affected by poison or paralysis, especially when paired with Critical Status and poison-duration tools.
Key Terms
Affinity — Critical-hit chance, expressed as a percentage. 100% means every raw hit crits.
Critical Hit — +25% physical damage on a hit. Indicated by a bright pink slash effect and a pink star above the damage number.
Blunder — Negative-affinity miss — 25% less raw damage. Indicated by a blue star under the damage number.
Hitzone Value — Per-part damage modifier on a monster. A part with hitzone ≥ 45 counts as a weak point for Weakness Exploit.
Wound — A breakable mark created by repeated focus-mode strikes. Hitting a wound triggers the +20% Weakness Exploit bonus.
RULE · Quick Takeaway — Affinity is excellent for most raw-focused builds, but it should follow the damage type. If your main damage cannot crit, spend those slots somewhere else.
